Photodynamic Therapy Boca Raton
Revivify Medspa and Anti-Aging at Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale, FL is pleased to provide photodynamic therapy to area women and men. This innovative dermatology treatment specifically targets and destroys precancerous skin damage. It combines the use of topical medication followed by exposure to a distinctive blue or red light source.
The medication is applied and allowed to be consumed by precancerous cells, subsequently triggered by the light to ruin sun damage.

PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY – IDEAL CANDIDATES
Ideal candidates for PDT usually have milder or fair skin which shows sun damage, particularly scaly spots called actinic keratosis. You might not be a great candidate if you’re sensitive to light or taking any sort of medication which may cause skin irritation during light-based remedies. You might also not be eligible if you have certain medical conditions, such as systemic lupus erythematosus or porphyria. During your initial consultation, Dr. Denise Guevara will review your medical history to find out if this treatment is ideal for you.
PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY – PROCEDURE TECHNIQUE
Photodynamic therapy uses specific topical drugs called photosensitizing agents, most commonly Amileuz, Levulan, or Metvixia. Based on where the treatment is going to be used, the medicine is most frequently applied directly to the upper layer of the epidermis. Once the drugs have been administered along with the suitable incubation period has passed (usually 1 — 3 hours), you’ll be exposed to the light source to trigger the photosensitizing, usually for 5 — 16 minutes, depending on the light source (most often the Blue U, Omnilux, or Sciton BBL). You may experience a hot, sexy, tingling, stinging, or mild burning sensation during the procedure. Even though a cooling fan is occasionally utilized to help alleviate these symptoms, it’s not immediately recommended because it can decrease the efficacy of the treatment. Afterward, your skin will be washed and sunscreen will be implemented to protect your skin.
PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY – WHAT TO EXPECT
Photodynamic Therapy Boca Raton is safe and effective on many areas of the body, like the face, scalp, chest, arms, legs, and feet. Once your procedure is finished, you should avoid direct sunlight for the first 24 — 48 hours. Nausea, dizziness, and headaches are possible side effects, but these should subside within a day or 2. Most patients experience a sunburn type of response that lasts for approximately 1 week. Less commonly, there is swelling, blistering, and crusting. Typically, we recommend a few treatments that are scheduled 4 — 6 months apart for optimum outcomes. We also consider repeating treatments each couple of years so as to keep on reducing the amount of actinic keratosis and sun damage on patients’ skin, hopefully reducing the amount of skin cancers they have.
